On August 14th, data released by shipbuilding and maritime industry analysis firm Clarkson showed that as of now, based on the total tonnage of the fleet put into operation, the total fleet size under the name of Chinese shipowners is 249.24 million tons, making China the world's largest shipowner country.

Recently, Chinese shipping companies have continuously added new orders. According to Clarkson's statistics, the current total number of orders held by Chinese shipping companies for new ships is 34.11 million tons. Industry insiders say that with the booming shipping industry, new orders for ships will further increase.

Expand fleet size

According to Clarkson data, China is the world's largest bulk carrier and container ship owner country, accounting for 24% of the global bulk carrier fleet and 16% of the global container ship fleet.

Specifically, as of now, there are 1005 bulk cargo ship owners, 498 oil tanker owners, 240 container ship owners, and 60 gas transport ship owners in China. Among them, COSCO Shipping Bulk Transport Co., Ltd. is the world's largest bulk carrier owner.

Clarkson believes that the mature and stable development of China's shipping financing leasing business helps Chinese shipowners rapidly expand their fleet size. From the perspective of energy transport fleets, there is still room for further development in the scale of oil and gas transport fleets.

It is worth noting that since 2020, the activity of Chinese shipowners in the second-hand ship market has significantly increased, with bulk carriers and oil tankers being the main types of buying ships. According to Clarkson data, since 2020, 780 Chinese shipowners have ordered new ships, 294 Chinese shipowners have purchased second-hand ships, and 428 Chinese shipowners have sold second-hand ships.

Increase shipbuilding capacity

According to Clarkson's statistics, currently, Chinese shipping companies hold a total of 34.11 million total tons of orders for new ships. The delivery schedule for large shipyards worldwide has been scheduled for 2026, with some scheduled for 2027 or 2028.

Clarkson predicts that by the end of 2025, global new shipbuilding capacity will increase by 10% from 2021, involving increased capacity from shipyard restart, increased capacity from shipyard expansion, and reduced capacity from shipyard closure of existing facilities.

As the world's largest shipbuilding country, China's production capacity has significantly increased. Recently, Chinese shipping companies have continuously added new orders. On August 10th, China Shipbuilding Corporation's subsidiary, China Shipbuilding Corporation Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., jointly signed a new shipbuilding order for four 38000 ton multi-purpose heavy lift vessels with China Shipbuilding Industry Trading Co., Ltd. and South Korea's Hanxin Shipping Co., Ltd. (HMM).

It is reported that this type of ship was designed by Shanghai Shipbuilding Research and Design Institute, a subsidiary of China Shipbuilding Corporation, with a total length of 182 meters, a molded width of 30 meters, and a molded depth of 16 meters. This type of ship is equipped with three cargo holds, hydraulic folding hatch covers and lifting hatch covers, two 400 ton and one 200 ton cranes, and desulfurization towers. The energy-saving devices include rudder balls, sector ducts, and side thruster covers, which are used to load various dry bulk cargo, large cargo, heavy cargo, containers, and dangerous goods.

Recently, the order for two 18500 ton IMO II chemical ships signed between Wuhu Shipyard Co., Ltd. and Donghai Anhe Bulk Transport Co., Ltd. (referred to as "Donghai Anhe Company") has officially come into effect. At this point, the number of this type of ship ordered by Donghai Anhe Company at Wuhu Shipyard has increased to 6. Wuhu Shipyard has held orders for 14 ships of this type.
